The first Twitter & Facebook defamation case in Australia proceeded to a full trial and made legal history with a court order of $105,000 in damages.

NSW school teacher, Christine Mickle, was defamed by a former Orange High School student, Andrew Farley, on Twitter and Facebook.

District Court judge, Michael Elkaim, ruled that Mr Farley pay compensatory damages of $85,000 for making false allegations about the music teacher. The Judge also ruled that Mr Farley's conduct in response to the case warranted an additional $20,000 in aggravated damages.
